Project Focus
Mycelium brick is a material that is being developed further into a more sustainable construction option. I dove into the world of fungi in hopes that concentrating on this material will introduce a newer way of looking at construction materials, and architecture.
The way this material is incorporated into the existing site is both by activities involved and a few architectural key pieces. The site’s name, Fungarium Grounds, is a lead to capturing this site as a place to explore the material of mycelium. The growth, exchange, and display of this material are captured in three distinct areas. Growth by showing the three stages of the lifecycle: mixing/prep space, incubation room, and processing the molds.
Exchange is present in the space by being sold to the public in the form of construction material, and through a foraging mart. The foraging mart carries a presence like a farmers market, but all goods have been foraged.
Finally, the display is shown through a gallery space and a festival that would happen during Michigan’s spring and summer months. The festival is a celebratory space to test the limits of mycelium and brick by making it a competition between groups who have joined. It brings awareness to the public and the architects of the world.
