Project Narrative

As a team of two, Mujie and I formulated a proposal for Macomb Township to redirect urbanization from its continuous sprawl and rapid growth. Due to Macomb's rapid growth and sparse natural features, we leaned into redirecting urbanization through rebuilding the ecosystem. Our design strategy focuses on answering the question(s): How can rebuilding the ecosystem redirect urbanization? And how can people and nature co-adapt through multispecies urbanism in Macomb?

Our design strategy contains several layers of intervention to redirect urbanization. We provided a balance of environmental and economic support. Wetland restoration and conservation easements are developed for proper drainage and environmental healing. Incentives are introduced through LID/GI retrofit designs to be placed on individual property. Net-neutral development will assist in conservation when development is needed; conservation will occur elsewhere in the same land quantity. Lastly, densification through a new SD1 zoning will increase support for Macomb’s growing population while attending to the wetlands. Our scenario aims for a slow transition using each design strategy simultaneously.

These design strategies are encapsulated in four main territories throughout Macomb Township to provide proper water drainage to avoid flooding by nurturing soils with native vegetation. Support loss of ecosystems and provide a better quality of life for humans and multispecies.

The territories provide proper water drainage to avoid flooding by nurturing soils with native vegetation. It also supports the loss of ecosystems, such as wetlands, which decreased by 88%, and provides a better quality of life for humans and multispecies by accessibility and availability. The four territories are meant to be implemented throughout Macomb Township to create equal opportunities and drift away from the suburban sprawl lifestyle.
